This was super cute and fun to play. Thanks for making and sharing this. Granted, I'm really late to the party, to play and to comment upon it... but still! Well done, Tom.

I loved it, especially the jaunty music!

This game is so cute! Annie looks adorable. :3

On the third level, I started walking to the left and now I can't control Annie anymore. She is stuck continuously running left. I can't turn her, jump, etc.

Oh, man, this takes me back to making my first few video games in the summer of 2010. Most of the Game Academy students made side scrollers like this one while I tried (and mostly didn't fail) to make a Zelda clone and a Galaga clone.

Unfortunately I can't complete the game without setting my refresh rate to 60Hz. With my usual 144Hz Annie doesn't jump high enough to collect all gems. Made me crazy for quite a few minutes until someone cleared that up for me in the comments below. Please consider fixing that or adding a note, there's lots of people with fast refresh rate-monitors nowadays :)

Hi! This doesn't quite count as a bug, but there is a hardlock on the first level in which you can collect gems. Near the bottom rightmost section of the level, you can fall to a section with no way to climb back out. It's not a big issue for a short game but I thought I'd let you know :3

I like it. :D

Some notes:

  • Annie’s sprite is real cute.
  • Ladders: Annie shouldn’t let go of the ladder unless the player moves off to the side or presses jump.
  • The continual bouncing while holding jump was a surprise.
  • If possible, set the flag to disable anti-aliasing for a crisp screen (may need to be set on a per-browser basis).

Finished within about 15mins. Overall a cute and fun game; I'm especially a fan of the character designs (translated to pixel art) and animation. They're simple and charming and beautifully executed. I would love to play more Gunnerkrigg Court mini games like this, but I also recognize these games take a TON of time to create.

As for the game mechanics, I wasn't a fan of climbing ladders. The moment you lifted your finger from the up-button, your character immediately lets go of the ladder and falls. This made pausing to look around or even getting onto another platform tricky. This only became frustrating when you'd fall down one ladder and while trying to panic-click your way back up you fall down 3 more ladders or platforms and find yourself at the bottom of the game.

When you're tasked to Find Mort, it's rewarding to see Mort's cute animation and big smile waiting for you... but then becomes super unsatisfying when you get in Mort's hit-box and there isn't a transition from Mort to Lv. 2. It feels like a glitch, even though I know it isn't.

Lastly, I want to go through every single door! Not just because they're doors, but because this is GUNNERKRIGG COURT! This is more of a me-problem than anything else, but boy did I waste some time trying to open those doors. :P

To be expected, for a new game being made by a new game-maker. :-) And yes, the music is delightful. Some players might like to turn the sound off; myself, I'm enjoying it while typing this reply. The ladder issue is because the programmer simply forgot (or didn't consider this) to have a game designed for users to pause and look around while on a ladder.

I'm getting Homestuck vibes, Please consider doing more mini-games like this.

For future reference: the astral projection with the blinker stone makes for a good game mechanic!

PS: was it intentional that this gem was released right when we were hinted that there might be one dead Annie from the past in an alternate timeline?

A bit janky, but well made, and great sprite work!

Hello, your game is framerate dependent: the faster your framerate, the faster the animations. On a 144Hz monitor, it's impossible to make some of the jumps as Anie is falling like a rock a few pixels after jump. When I reduce my monitor refresh rate to 60Hz, it works like a charm. You need to time your animations according to the time elapsed between each animation frame and not by animation frame.
Regards, an avid reader and fellow game developer :)

Thank you! I thought I was crazy when I read all the comments of how people completed the game, while I was completely stuck at a certain point. Never occurred to me that my refresh rate is the problem. Thanks so much for clearing that up!

Probably because they are using a per-frame fixed unit to calculate the arc rather than using something related to the fixed progression of time

It's fine as is! I liked the second level better, it seemed pretty intuitive just going around a big ol' circle.
I know you said you won't develop the game any further, but I think a counter for the crystals would have been a pleasant addition.

Also, please don't change the interaction between the E headbang and climbing a ladder. It's great.

Also I think the run and climb animation looks nice

I like it! Cure little game, only recommendation would be not falling off the ladders as soon as you let go of up.

My jump appears to be a few pixels short of what's necessary to get out of holes (including the first hole right after mort teleports you). Thus I'm only able to ascend using ladders. I found a route that successfully collects all the gems on the first screen but then I'm stuck, there's no way out. Chrome on Windows.

Cute!

The jumping could be a bit refined, especially the dropping and jumping off ladders. But "I did it" :D

i like how you can press E to headbang

I! Love! This!

I can't climb ladders though, I just jump

edit: scratch that! forgot wasd and arrows were different lmao

This game is great! partway through jumping just stopped working right- i could jump, but not on to things. no idea what the problem is.

It's nice to see Mort again.

Cute! It was fun playing as Annie.

The graphics are well-suited for the early days of the comic while still giving that retraux game feel.

The controls and the level design doesn't always synergize very well. Annie drops like a brick one she hits the peak of her jump arc. This makes it difficult to navigate through the air for the jumps that are over wider gaps or are landing on narrow platforms. The ladders also feel a bit off, since you have to hold up to stay on the ladder, so you're always going up the ladder, making it more difficult to do timed-jumps from the ladder.

Well if this isn't just the CUTEST thing!

this is absolutely fantastic  thanks  for making this

The end screen is going into my coaching folder under the motivational tab, for when this one is not quite appropriate.

I'd appreciate mobile controls, but I guess I'll just have to play it from the outside of the comfort of my bed

Very fun!  But when it comes to the "find Mort" stage, that lamp at the beginning of Level 1 is a heck of a red herring for people who have read the comic…

Great job! This was fun and I was totally invested in finding all the coins. (I swore a couple of times when one was JUST out of reach and I had to go around to try again.) Cute graphics, I liked how her hair swung when she moved. :)

More please! :)

Alas, never finishes loading on Windows/Chrome!

Cute and fun, though (same comment on ladder; she shouldn't fall off the ladder if she was already climbing and you stop hitting up!)

Deleted post

I ran it on Edge instead of Chrome.

The issue is from machines that chrome hasn't added webgl on (I can't run it on my mac in chrome because it's an intel gpu, but my pc works just fine because I have a graphics card).

Pixi supports canvas fallback, but I'm not familiar if ct.js exposes them

Ah!  If you have issues, the issue is adblock.  I found that ublock origin kills the game.  So disable your adblocker and you're fine.

Tom, this is fantastic. The character movement is satisfying (although I wish she stayed on the ladder when she stopped climbing), the art and animation are top-notch, and the music is quite charming, despite your excusing. The end screen made me laugh out loud 😄

I hope you make more games in the future :)

A cute little platformer with a simple but interesting monochrome design. I only wish there were more levels.

Very cute! Nicely done.

Well, I did it. Very cool, thanks!
